About the Artist

I was born in Lancashire, and studied Fine Art in the 1960s at Leeds University under Professor Quentin Bell.
After careers in teaching and town planning I moved to East Anglia in 1980 (now living in North Suffolk), then spent over 20 years in the art business with my husband, specialising in Modern British Art. At the same time I continued to paint, exhibiting mainly in galleries in East Anglia. I have also undertaken a number of mural commissions.
I paint almost exclusively in acrylic on paper or board. My highly decorative work is characterised by strong colour and composition. My subject matter includes still life, the human figure and animals, treated in a very stylised manner, as well as purely abstract compositions.
More recently I have taken up rug-making. These bold, colourful hooked rugs are in a similar style to my paintings, and make dramatic wall-hangings.
If you would like to purchase one of my paintings or rugs (subject to availability), or specially commission something from me, (painting, rug or mural), or simply for further information on my work, I can be contacted on 01986 798064 or by e-mail - irenestocks@tiscali.co.uk
